NatureKids – April 2025
April: Celebrating Earth, Spring, and Stewardship
Spring has officially sprung, and it’s the perfect time to step outside and reconnect with the natural world around us. Earth Day is a great reminder that we all play a role in taking care of our planet. Whether it’s picking up litter, planting something green, or simply noticing the small wonders around us, every action matters. This month, we invited groups to take part in activities that encouraged creativity, care, and curiosity:
Craft with Recycled Materials –
Students were encouraged to get resourceful and turn everyday “trash” into one-of-a-kind works of art! From cereal box creations to egg carton creatures, the possibilities are endless, this activity showed how creativity and sustainability can go hand in hand.
City Nature Challenge / Bioblitz
This month’s challenge prompted groups to keep their eyes open for signs of wildlife in their schoolyards and parks as part of the lead-up to the 2025 City Nature Challenge (April 25–28). This annual bioblitz invites people from around the world to become part of a growing community of nature lovers and contribute valuable data to science! By sharing their observations on iNaturalist, groups had the chance to practice their nature ID skills, explore their local wild spaces, and add to our collective understanding of biodiversity.
Check out iNaturalist today (web or app) and share your own observations!
Spring Clean-Up
Groups were invited to roll up their sleeves and help clean up their communities: yards, parks, and school grounds. Taking care of our community outdoor spaces is a simple way we can be stewards of the environment!
Here’s a peek into what our groups were up to this month:

Hampton Fresh Air Collective did a tremendous job with their Earth Day clean-up. Just look at all those full bags, way to go!

Sussex Elementary School had all 22 of their classes participate in a schoolyard clean-up. Each class filled a bag and was surprised by how much litter they found and by some of the unexpected items they came across!

The Cub Club was busy with multiple activities this month: making crafts out of recyclables, completing an Earth Day clean-up, and contributing observations to iNaturalist as part of their BioBlitz. They’ve also been collecting natural loose parts for their mud kitchen, items that can be reused or will naturally decompose. Together, they’re building habits for a sustainable future and embracing their role as stewards of the environment.

Munchkins Afterschool went on a nature adventure that sparked some thoughtful questions: “What if we don’t find everything yet?” “Isn’t it too soon for bees?” Although unsure at first, they were excited to discover things like a bird’s nest in place of a bird and debated whether lichen counted as moss or fungi. Their curiosity led to knowledge-sharing and rich discussion!

Munchkins Clubhouse enjoyed a sensory-rich nature walk using scavenger hunt cards. They heard birds and squirrels, smelled pine and earth, felt cold snow and rough bark, and spotted birds soaring through a bright spring sky.

Little Cubs Afterschool had a meaningful discussion about why it’s important to care for the Earth. The kids shared that they feel sad when they see litter and often pick up garbage, even if it isn’t theirs. They talked about keeping the Earth healthy so animals have homes, and so we can keep growing food and flowers. They were thrilled to help clean their playground and were determined to collect every last piece of trash!

Here We Grow had a great time participating in a spring scavenger hunt, even if they didn’t find everything on their cards. They also rolled up their sleeves for an Earth Day clean-up around their play area, taking pride in helping their environment.
Thank you to all the groups who participated this month. Keep exploring and being stewards of the natural world!
Happy spring!
