NatureKids – November 2024
This month with NatureKids: Fall Fun!, Groups were encouraged to embrace the autumn spirit with many themed activities using natural materials.
Participants were challenged to build a faux campfire and create a cozy space for conversation, crafting and storytelling. Continuing to use their creativity and assorted natural materials they’d gathered, the nature explorers were invited to design whimsical woodland characters. Another activity was to explore the outdoors through nature journaling, capturing observations with drawings, leaf rubbings, and written notes. To keep warm in the chilly air, our suggestion: an autumn themed relay race featuring stations like acorn bowling and pinecone tossing.
These activities were designed to foster connection, teamwork, and appreciation for the natural world.
Teamwork and creativity brought the fire to life for learners at Little Cubs Afterschool, sparking conversations about fire safety and its role in nature.
Participants from Here We Grow explored their nearby woodland trail, using the NatureNB tree guide to identify different tree species. This activity allowed them to engage closely with their surroundings and develop a greater understanding of the trees in the area.
Nature enthusiasts of the Cub Club enjoyed using their Nature NB Tree Guides to compare leaves they had collected. They examined leaves closely, noting their shapes, colors, and patterns to match them with the guide’s descriptions. This hands-on experience fostered careful observation and a deeper appreciation of the forest.
Munchkins Afterschool program explorers worked collaboratively to assemble their fire with twigs, rocks, and pine needles. They used their imagination to feel the warmth radiating from their creation while inspecting their handiwork. With tree guides in hand, the group also explored the area, identifying different species and learning more about the forest around them.
Some even kicked back in a hammock, enjoying the tree guide as a light read while soaking up the natural surroundings.
Fall is a wonderful time to enjoy the changing of the seasons and connect with nature. Stay tuned for next month, where we take flight with bird-themed activities to explore the world of birding.
