Danaus plexippus
The Monarch is one of our only migrating pollinators. Its adult form is fairly recognizable for most people, with its bright orange and black wings.
Here in New Brunswick, the Monarchs that arrive in the summer are the result of several generations of butterflies, coming all the way from Mexico. But the ones that leave must make the trip in one go. We call this generation the “Super-Monarchs”.
Every year, Monarchs lay their eggs on Milkweed species, their only true host plants. Their young can only eat the leaves of this plant.
There are many issues threatening Monarchs nowadays. They are now considered Endangered both provincially and federally, but we can do our part to help. Go to the the Monarchs hub below to learn more!
