Celebrating Fred Richards: Nature NB’s Roger Leblanc Memorial 2026 Naturalist of the Year

Nature NB is pleased to recognize Fred Richards of Nature Moncton as our 2026 Roger Leblanc Memorial Naturalist of the Year.

For Fred, a love of nature has always been about more than observing the natural world—it’s about helping others experience it, too. Over the past six years, he has built more than 700 bird nesting boxes, providing homes for Tree Swallows, Eastern Bluebirds, Black-capped Chickadees and other wildlife. These boxes can be found along walking trails, at conservation sites, retention ponds and in communities throughout the region.

Fred has also played a leading role in bringing the peregrine falcons nesting atop Assumption Place in Moncton to the public. After years of work to secure permission for a camera, Fred took on the technical challenge of creating a live internet feed, allowing people around the world to watch the falcon family without disturbing them. When the nest box eventually needed replacing, Fred designed and built its replacement.

But Fred’s contribution extends well beyond birds. He has been an enthusiastic organizer and community builder with Nature Moncton, helping organize the Petitcodiac River Appreciation Day, creating popular Wednesday evening nature walks, and ensuring that nature has a presence at community events.

He has also worked to strengthen connections between nature clubs across New Brunswick by organizing the Nature NB Club Committee, creating opportunities for clubs to share ideas and work together.

Since becoming president of Nature Moncton six years ago, Fred has helped grow the club’s membership by more than doubling it. His enthusiasm, leadership and willingness to turn ideas into action have inspired countless people to get involved with nature.

Fred’s work is supported by his partner, Susan Richards, who has been a constant source of encouragement and has often been by his side in his many nature-related activities.

Fred represents the very best of the naturalist tradition: someone who not only loves nature, but inspires others to discover it, enjoy it and care for it.
